Purpose of Open Access

Knowledge beyond Disciplinary Boundaries

The Paradigm Chronicle welcomes multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship. Open access allows research developed within one discipline to become visible and potentially useful to scholars working in other academic areas.

Such accessibility can encourage comparative inquiry, interdisciplinary discussion and new intellectual connections among humanities, social sciences, education, commerce, management, science, mathematics, technology, law, health sciences and other areas of scholarship.

Open Access Does Not Eliminate Copyright

The fact that an article can be accessed online without payment does not automatically place the article in the public domain or remove copyright and other intellectual-property rights associated with it.

Copyright ownership, author rights and permissions for copying, distribution, adaptation or other forms of reuse are governed by the copyright agreement, publication terms and any specific licence formally applicable to the article.

Readers, authors and other users should respect the rights of authors, the journal and relevant third-party copyright holders when reproducing or otherwise using published material.

Responsible Scholarly Use of Published Content

Published content may be read, cited and used for legitimate scholarly purposes subject to the copyright and licensing conditions applicable to the relevant article. Users should ensure that any further reproduction, distribution or adaptation is legally and ethically permissible.

Open access can increase potential visibility and readership; however, open accessibility itself does not guarantee inclusion in any particular indexing database, citation level or measure of scholarly impact.

Open Access for Education and Research

Reader Access and Publication Charges Are Separate Matters

Open access refers primarily to the ability of readers to access published scholarly content and should be distinguished from any Article Processing Charge, publication fee or other author-side cost that may apply.

Where any publication-related fee is applicable, the amount, conditions and payment requirements should be communicated transparently through the journal's relevant APC or publication-fee policy.

Editorial screening, peer review and publication decisions should be based upon academic quality, originality, relevance and ethical compliance and should not be determined by an author's ability to make a payment.

Open Accessibility Does Not Reduce Academic Standards

The open-access status of the journal does not reduce the scholarly standards applied to submitted manuscripts. Manuscripts remain subject to appropriate editorial screening, peer review and publication-ethics requirements.

Publication decisions should be based upon considerations such as originality, academic relevance, methodological quality, clarity, ethical compliance and contribution to scholarly knowledge.

Open access concerns the availability of published research to readers; it does not replace or weaken independent peer review, editorial judgement or scholarly quality-control mechanisms.

Permissions relating to copying, redistribution, adaptation and other forms of reuse depend upon the copyright and licence formally applied to the relevant article or journal content.
