Abstract

Water has played a pivotal role in the evolution of human civilization. It is not merely an essential natural resource for human survival but has also served as the foundation for agriculture, animal husbandry, trade, industry, sanitation, and urban planning. Ancient civilizations typically flourished along riverbanks, as rivers provided the resources necessary for drinking water, irrigation, and agriculture. Among India's ancient civilizations, the Indus Valley Civilization—also known as the Harappan Civilization—is particularly notable for its advancements in water management and urban planning. The Indus Valley Civilization developed primarily around the Indus River and its tributaries. Its major cities included Harappa, Mohenjo-daro, Dholavira, Lothal, Kalibangan, and Rakhigarhi. The cities of this civilization featured houses built of baked bricks, roads, wells, bathrooms, reservoirs, and underground or covered drainage systems. These structures indicate that the people of this civilization had developed a systematic approach to water storage, distribution, utilization, and drainage. A defining characteristic of the Indus Civilization was not merely the availability of water, but the people's understanding of how to store, conserve, maintain the hygiene of, and reuse the available water. The complex system of water harvesting and reservoirs at Dholavira, in particular, demonstrates that the inhabitants had developed water management techniques tailored to local geographical and climatic conditions.
